Ichinao – Asakusa
On June 13th, I had the honor of visiting Ichinao in Tokyo’s historic Asakusa district. Together with Matt and Sacha, we stepped into an intimate room adorned with tatami flooring and a beautifully arranged low table. The setting was immediately striking — floor cushions with a single red armrest and a hollowed space beneath the table to comfortably tuck in our legs, offering a traditional yet thoughtfully designed experience.
Traditional Music

As we settled in and exchanged small talk, the entertainment began to prepare behind the scenes. The evening opened with an exquisite series of appetizers, soon accompanied by live performances of traditional Japanese music by geishas and skilled musicians. The enchanting sounds of the koto and bamboo flute filled the air, creating a serene and immersive atmosphere.
Food

Following the music, the main course was served — an elegant display of high-end Japanese cuisine. We had the chance to engage in light conversation with the geishas, exchanging stories and perspectives about our respective cultures, all while sipping on Japanese beer. The food was more than exquisite: the geishas helped us delicately dismantle the fish, and rice was traditionally served at the end. Squid, edamame, even a plum — each dish arrived gradually, presented with elegant garnishes, delicate sauces, and sake on the side.
Geishas

Between courses, the geishas performed traditional dances, offering moments of graceful artistry that beautifully punctuated the meal and conversation. Not only their makeup but also their vibrant kimonos were absolutely stunning. I had the chance to learn about their lives and was struck by their warmth and sense of humor — insightful and fun!
Deep Experience
It was a rare and deeply enriching experience — a glimpse into a more refined and lesser-seen side of Japanese culture, far from the mainstream tourist trail. The attention to detail in every aspect — from the food and music to the choreography and ambiance — reflected a level of care and craftsmanship that made us feel almost like royalty. It was truly a pleasure to discover this hidden gem in the heart of Asakusa.
